You haven’t heard pop hits played like this before. Vitamin String Quartet are known for reimagining popular songs as orchestral compositions, taking on 2017’s biggest tracks on their recent release VSQ Performs the Hits of 2017, which reimagines tracks from Ed Sheeran, Lorde and Imagine Dragons.
VSQ isn’t a quartet in the traditional sense, but rather a loose collective of string projects. With help from VSQ musicians, the group’s project director James Curtiss shared a playlist with USA TODAY of some favorite tracks that the group has covered in recent years.
Ed Sheeran, Shape of You
Not only is Sheeran’s cut 2017’s biggest song, but our rendition leads off our VSQ Performs the Hits of 2017 compilation.
Charli XCX, Boom Clap
Charli XCX’s huge hit from The Fault in Our Stars has remained one of our biggest tracks since we dropped it in 2014.
The Weeknd, Wicked Games
This has the dark, moody vibe prominently featured in the Weeknd’s later, more renowned work, with an edgier swing to it.
The Black Keys, Gold on the Ceiling
This duo’s modern four-on-the-floor ditties provided us the opportunity to dig into some old-fashioned barn-burners.
Lady Gaga, The Edge of Glory
Our rendition of the Mother Monster’s Born This Way closer is one of the most buoyant and bustling pieces we did in the 2010s.
Game of Thrones soundtrack, Main Title
Our rendition from the Geek Wedding Collection is now a fan fave. No conversation about VSQ music is complete without it.
Daft Punk, Fragments of Time
Cut as a Record Store Day exclusive, this has a light and airy arrangement that more of our fans need to dig into.
Gorillaz’ Plastic Beach opens with a pulsating electro hip-hop number that we arranged into one of our heaviest tunes.
Lana Del Rey, Summertime Sadness
We’ve had several successes…
