Utah football scrimmage: Coaches happy, ice cream truck visits, fans’ all-Whittingham team

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said the Utes got exactly what they needed to get in their first camp scrimmage.

“The execution level of the offense is continuing to go up, starting to settle into the scheme and feel comfortable with what we’re doing,” he continued. “Defense, more of the same — great hustle, great intensity.”

Whittingham added that the special teams were sharp.

A fumble in the red zone proved to be the major negative, he said, in a scrimmage that took place without media observation. No statistics were kept.

Whittingham said that everyone stayed healthy and that the work got done.

“I think, for being 19 days out, we’re right where we need to be,” he noted.

Standouts in the scrimmage, Whittingham added, included wide receivers Raelon Singleton and Darren Carrington II, Moss, the entire defense and punter Mitch Wishnowsky.

TAYLOR PLEASED: New offensive coordinator Troy Taylor said it was a good day for the offense. Taylor noted things were very well executed, a lot of plays were made and there were no drops.

“One of our best days,” Taylor said.

As for the quarterback competition, Taylor said all of them played great. Whittingham was more specific, noting that there’s still very little separation between Troy Williams, Tyler Huntley and Cooper Bateman.
