Segerstrom adds another highlight to season with first-round playoff win – Orange County Register

SANTA ANA – The Segerstrom baseball team didn’t get discouraged when it lost an early lead against Valley Christian of Cerritos in a CIF-SS Division 4 first-round game on Friday.

Instead, the Jaguars acted like they’d been there before.

They quickly retook the lead and then added to it in the late innings, adding up to a 14-3 victory that put Segerstrom in a place it definitely had never been before – the second round of the playoffs.

The Jaguars will play top-seeded Tahquitz of Hemet in the second round Tuesday at Tahquitz High.

“It’s definitely satisfying to some degree being able to move on to the second round,” Segerstrom coach Erasmo Ramirez said. “Our guys are playing with a lot of confidence and we feel like we can go up against anybody.”

Segerstrom (20-10) won its first league title in school history when it finished atop the Golden West League this season. The Jaguars had won a few wild-card playoff games since Ramirez took over the young program in 2010, but never a first-round game.

“We’ve had some heartbreak in the first round the last couple years,” Ramirez said.

Segerstrom scored two unearned runs in the first, but Valley Christian came back with three in the second.

Segerstrom second baseman Miguel Sanchez, who finished 4 for 4 with 4 RBI and three runs scored in the leadoff spot, tied the score at 3-3 with an RBI single in the Jaguars’ half of the second, and they took advantage of another two-out, two-run error by the Crusaders to move ahead 5-3.

Segerstrom blew the game open with two runs in the fifth and seven in the sixth.

“We got a lot of positives out of this game,” Ramirez said. “We were able to face some adversity early, and that way we felt a little bit of that playoff pressure, that type of tough atmosphere, and I like the way our guys came back. That’s the sign of a good playoff team.”
